Career Goals and Personal History
I started my career in health care in the fall of 2002 as a nurse aide. At this same time I started to work towards my Associates Degree in Nursing from Grand Rapids Community College. I completed this degree in June of 2007 and obtained my first nurse position at Battle Creek Health Systems on their Cardiac/Pulmonary/Tele unit. In January of 2009 I started taking classes towards my Bachelors in Nursing from Ferris State University. Also at this same time, I took a position with Holland Hospital working in the Intensive Care and Tele unit.
While pursuing my Bachelors degree I had the opportunity to be a hands on educator to new nurses hired onto my unit. I also was able to precept several nursing students who were in their last semester of school. This opportunity helped to cement my desire to be an educator. I completed my degree at Ferris State University in December of 2011. I then decided to not take a break and plunged into my Masters of Science in Nursing at Ferris State University in January of 2012. My plan is to have my degree completed in May of 2014.
In August of 2013 I stated myself down the path to complete my 5 and 10 year goals. I took on the challenge of being a clinical instructor at Hope College in Holland MI. This was an excellent learning opportunity that evolved into a part time position when I was asked to both teach clinical and lecture for a class at Hope.
I completed my masters degree in May of 2014 and accepted a full time position with Holland Hospital as Education Facilitator for Cerner and HOLLIE (Holland's on-line learning management system). This position has caused me to alter my career goals. I remain committed to my desire to teach the next generation of nursing students but I also see the possibilities in merging education and informatics.
